Belfast local charged with murdering his nephew

September 9th 2009

A man from Belfast has appeared in court charged with the murder of his homeless nephew at the beginning of July this year. George Morrison was allegedly stabbed to death by Samuel Morrison in the early hours of the morning in North Belfast. Samuel Morrison, 46, has been remanded in custody by Belfast police after admitting responsibility for his nephew's death to police, yet claims he acted in self-defence. George Morrison's aunt, Anne, has spoken at the devastation the murder has inflicted on his family. "He was a quiet, harmless man," she said. "We can't believe this has happened. We are still in shock. I have been told that neighbours tried to help him but he bled to death. We are all very upset." Local councillor Conor Maskey condemned the attack, telling reporters: "This was a tragic accident. Rows are commonplace at the tail-end of the weekend but when it manifests itself, first in a knife being used and secondly in someone losing their life, then it is particularly tragic." The annual rate of knife crimes in Northern Ireland has been running around 1,000 a year since 2003, leading to police and politicians in Belfast have calling for a wider crackdown on knife crime in the city.
