The Passage withdraws service "as a last resort"

After initially denying week-long bans, the CEO issues a statement explaining their possible use
 The Passage has acknowledged that "as a last resort" it is refusing its service on a temporary basis, for some people who are found sleeping rough near Westminster Cathedral.

The charity initially denied the rumours that week-long bans were being issued if people were found to be using the area. But following our original inquiry, Mick Clarke, chief executive of the Passage, said in a statement: “The Passage doesn’t want anyone to have to sleep rough. However, in the case of the Piazza, there have been times when large numbers in that area have, in our opinion, made it a very unsafe place for rough sleepers who are very vulnerable to be.

"Consequently, and as a last resort, we have said that we reserve the right to withdraw service for a temporary period to those who continue to sleep rough on the Piazza and are not vulnerable; we continually review the situation. The Passage is about engagement and not enforcement and, from reviewing our records over the last few months, no one has had services withdrawn as a result of this."

He added: "If any rough sleeper does have any concerns about this, The Passage would be very pleased to meet with them and discuss the situation."
