Evictions fall by a third

November 01 2010
Shelter claims its campaign among housing associations has had an impact

A new report from Shelter has revealed that evictions by Scottish housing associations have fallen by more than a third over the past year.

The figures show that 942 people were evicted in 2009/2010, compared to 1,524 in 2008/2009. Graeme Brown, director of Shelter Scotland, welcomed the findings but he urged that more should be done to help people in vulnerable positions. "All along, we have been campaigning in the knowledge that the number of evictions across Scotland was far too high and that local authorities and housing associations could find alternative ways of dealing with tenants.

"The fact that evictions by housing associations were reduced by 38 per cent last year is highly encouraging and shows that our campaigning efforts in this area have made a real impact."
