Stabbing in SW1

May 18 2009
Rough sleeper assaults PCSO in a seemingly unprovoked attack A rough sleeper has been charged with assault after a seemingly unprovoked attack on a police community support officer (PCSO) at the start of July. The assailant, Ian Richardson, stabbed the unnamed officer in the arm and thumb before fleeing the scene. The officer was rushed to casualty and the area cordoned off while the police interviewed witnesses and searched local area. A Metropolitan Police spokesman described the victim's wounds as "non life-threatening" and the officer was discharged from hospital the same afternoon. One witness told BBC News: "The [police] van was stationary in traffic and he [Mr Richardson] caught up with the driver's side window. He put his arm up and the next minute he looked like he was punching the driver." It is not known when Mr Richardson was apprehended, but he was officially charged on the 5th July, two days after the attack took place. The Met spokesman confirmed: "Ian Richardson, of no fixed abode, has been charged with Section 18, unwarranted assault on a PCSO. His case has been referred to the Westminster Magistrates Court." The charge sheet had not been processed by the court at the time of going to press, though a hearing was scheduled for August.
