Woman?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s foot set alight by homeless man

Cannock Good Samaritan hospitalised for burns after assault

A rough sleeper has pleaded guilty to actual bodily harm (ABH) at Cannock Magistrates’ Court for an assault dating back to the autumn of 2011.

A 55-year-old woman awoke in agony last September after a homeless man she had given shelter to set her foot on fire as she slept. Mother-of-two Lynne Baillie was assaulted at her home in Penkridge, Staffordshire after allowing Aron Hadijouanna and his girlfriend to stay for two nights, saving them from sleeping rough in the bitter cold.

Hadijouanna returned Ms Baillie’s kindness by dousing her foot in lighter fuel and setting it alight. After falling asleep on the settee, she awoke to greet the pair and her ignited foot. Ms Baillie, who suffers from bipolar disorder, said: “I screamed at the pair of them to get out of my home and limped to the bathroom... I was taken to Cannock Chase Hospital, but it was too serious for them to treat, so I was taken to Stafford General.”

Mr Hadijouanna, of Wolverhampton, who is currently unemployed, admitted one charge of assault occasioning ABH at Cannock Magistrates’ Court. However, the case was adjourned for probation reports to be compiled before he is sentenced.

Mr Hadijouanna’s solicitor, Neil Gerrity, said of his client: “I believe there might be issues that relate to mental health and learning”. Mr Hadijouanna was granted conditional bail.
