Cardboard Citizens

May 18 2009
The theatre collective are bringing Orwell‘s Down and Out in Paris and London with Jack London‘s People of the Abyss bang up-to-date The Cardboard Citizens are back with a vengeance, and this time it's Orwell. The theatre collective of homeless and ex-homeless cast and crew are fusing Orwell's Down and Out in Paris and London with Jack London's People of the Abyss and bringing these famous accounts of homelessness bang up-to-date with quotes and testimony from the Citizens themselves. Down/Out is a netherworld of tramping and poverty, set to a live and recorded soundtrack by the company's New Music Ensemble and the Citizens' own singing group. The 25 cast members use photography and video clips alongside the drama to explore themes of homelessness and investigate the accuracy of the original texts. The Cardboard Citizens are performing Down/Out at Laban in Greenwich SE8 at 7.30pm on the 19th and 20th of July. Tickets are ¬¨¬£5, but The Pavement has two tickets a night to give out to the first reader to contact the editor - just state the night you want. There will be a post-show talk by artistic director Adrian Jackson after the first performance, to which the audience is welcome. The British Theatre Guide says of the Cardboard Citizens that this is "theatre at its funniest, blackest, most daring and challenging best". Support the UK's only professional theatre company run for and by the homeless. Go and have a gander.
