Hostel eviction filmed - but it wasn\'t official

September 25 2009
Documentary company happened to be following a woman who was evicted When The Pavement received a call to say an eviction was being filmed on Monday 11th June, outside a London hostel, it sounded like a crass stunt involving Big Brother. However, it was, unfortunately, the eviction of a resident at Look Ahead's hostel in Victoria, and the filming was incidental; a documentary film crew happened to be following the evictee and her partner. Kate Fallows, a spokeswoman for Look Ahead, told us: "We are aware that the resident we evicted is being filmed by a production company seeking to produce a programme about the homeless. The programme is yet to be commissioned. Look Ahead support the production company's aim of promoting the issues faced by homeless people, but are not currently involved in the filming and none has taken place within our hostel buildings." Speaking directly about the event, she added: "Eviction is used as a last resort when residents breach their licence despite attempts to engage with them and warnings. We take seriously our responsibility to maintain the safety and wellbeing of other residents and so, on occasions, eviction is the only possible course of action, as was the case in this instance." Look Ahead's Victoria Hostel, Castle Lane, provides accommodation and support services for single homeless people aged 18-65. The hostel has 98 bed spaces.
