London rough sleeping rise

July 09 2014

A new report ‘Street to Home 2013/14’, has shown that the number of rough sleeps in London has risen by one per cent in the last year.

The report recorded that 6,508 people were seen sleeping on the streets of London between April 1, 2013 and March 31, 2014. This compares to 6,437 the previous year.

The ‘Street to Home 2013/14’ report presents information about people seen rough sleeping by outreach teams in London from the Combined Homelessness and Information Network (CHAIN), commissioned by the Greater London Authority (GLA).

It found that 70 per cent of new rough sleepers were only seen on the streets once. Four in 10 new rough sleepers accessed the No Second Night Out scheme (NSNO) and 85 per cent of them –1,529 people – did not return to the London streets that year.

Only three per cent of all rough sleepers – 164 people – were seen in 2013/14 at least once in every quarter.

Howard Sinclair, chief executive of St Mungo’s Broadway, which produced the report, said: “Rough sleeping has increased again. Whilst it is a relief that the increase is only one per cent compared with 13 per cent the year before, the fact remains that 6,508 people ended up on the capital’s streets last year.”
