Homelessness still rising

July 05 2015
New report suggests a further surge in rent arrears, evictions and homelessness

A new report shows that government benefits restrictions will result in a surge in rent arrears, evictions and homelessness.

In a survey, 80 per cent of local authorities reported an increase in applications for emergency hardship funds.

In the first three months of 2015, social landlords made 27,000 possession claims and more than 11,000 families in England and Wales were evicted – an increase of over 50 per cent in the last five years.

Meanwhile in London new figures showed a 16 per cent rise in the last year in the number of people sleeping rough; and 7,581 people slept rough over the course of 2014/15, more than double the figure of 3,673 in 2009/10.

Jon Sparkes, chief executive of Crisis, said: “Homelessness needs to be a top priority for the Mayor of London, and for those who seek to replace him in 2016.”
