New bill extends Right to Buy

November 01 2015
...but if you can afford £450k, you'll be alright!

Critics have challenged the government’s new Housing and Planning Bill, which proposes extending the Right to Buy scheme to 1.3 million housing association tenants.

Tom Copley, housing spokesperson of the London Assembly Labour Group, has called on the Mayor of London to vote against the bill, saying the policy “will come at a severe cost to Londoners, with thousands of genuinely affordable homes to be lost in London each year.”

If passed, the bill would also require councils to provide 200,000 Starter Homes on new developments.

These “affordable” homes would be offered to first-time buyers at a 20 per cent discount on market prices, with prices capped at £450,000 within Greater London and £250,000 outside.
