Social Bite encourages customers to buy 'suspended' items

If you’re in Scotland, you may have already enjoyed a free cuppa or bite to eat at a Social Bite café. The concept is simple but effective: on top of their own order, customers can pay for a extra coffee or meal.

Local homeless people can then come in and claim these ‘suspended’ items. All of the cafés’ profits go to charity too, and a quarter of the team used to be homeless.

To claim your free drink or snack, just say you’re homeless and you heard about their suspended service – and see what’s on offer. Top tip from Social Bite: don’t go at peak times (before 9am and from 12–2pm). Also, if you head along after closing time (around 3.30–4pm) leftover food is sometimes given away.

Readers in Edinburgh can find Social Bite cafés at 89 Shandwick Place (which also hosts ‘Social Suppers’ on Tuesday evenings) and 131 Rose Street. There are also branches in Glasgow at 103 St Vincent Street and 5 Bothwell Street.
