Book sales kept him housed and now he's helping underprivileged Joburg kids

Selling books and book reviews to motorists saved Philani Dladla from a life of addiction and homelessness on the streets of Johannesburg.

Now the 24-year-old has published a book of his inspiring journey entitled The Pavement Bookworm (no relation – the nickname was given by locals!). Initially Dladla used the money he made from selling the books to buy soup and bread for others and save enough to rent a room.

Once he had a roof over his head, he began giving free books to underprivileged children before eventually starting up a Book Reader’s Club for local young people.
