Job centres not fit for purpose

November 01 2015
They're “dehumanising and demoralising”, according to YMCA England

Youth charity YMCA England has demanded an overhaul of job centres after research found the support offered to young people looking for work to be “dehumanising and demoralising”. It highlighted the case of 19-year-old Chloe from North Tyneside who was forced to give up her carers training course after being told she was no longer eligible for Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA). “I only had three days left of my course when I was told by the job centre that I would lose my benefits because I was training for one hour longer than what was permitted each week,” said Chloe. “If I had completed the training I would be in long-term employment now and off benefits, so I’ve actually gone a step back.”

YMCA is now calling on job centres to make improvements including providing each each person with a work coach, providing better access to training, and more support when they have found work.
