Twenty per cent became homeless in last year

A survey has shown a huge increase in rough sleeping in Greece in the last five years.

The poll, completed by the City of Athens Homeless Shelter (KYADA), showed that 71 per cent of rough sleepers became homeless within the past five years, with just over 20 per cent becoming homeless in the last year.

The Greek government has been struggling with a financial crisis since the economic crash of 2007–08.

The impact has included salary cuts, pension cuts and rising unemployment leading to widespread homelessness.
