Homeless radio

May 18 2009
Local homeless volunteers behind Cambridge station‘s magazine-style programme A new radio show produced and presented entirely by homeless people has been created in Cambridge using funding made available by the local council. Seven homeless volunteers broadcast a magazine-style one-hour programme on alternate Tuesdays at 2pm on 105FM for Cambridge or at 209 Radio. The team has been trained and helped by Kirsten Lavers, editor of Willow Walker, and station manager Karl Hartland, who used the Kick Start funding of the Cambridge City Council for meaningful occupation projects. "The project was set up with the help of Kick Start funding, which has just run out, so we are desperately searching for more funding to continue this successful project," Ms Lavers said. "We have new people who want to join the team and need to receive training and the existing team want new members so that we can extend the programme to weekly rather than fortnightly, as it is currently," she added. Ms Lavers said she was hoping to receive a second round of funding and hopes that the original members will continue their involvement as mentors to other homeless volunteers who have already expressed an interest in joining the training course. The organisers added they would be keen to share the model with other community radio stations and homeless projects.
