Victory for toothless man

May 21 2009
Steak knife was for cutting up food, says Steven Johnston A homeless man has been acquitted after being arrested by police for carrying a steak knife in his bag. Steven Johnston, 49, had just had an operation to remove all of his teeth because of a tumour in his nose, leaving him unable to eat, when he was stopped and searched by police in Clarence Street, Kingston, on 20th December. He told the court that a friend who had seen him struggling to cut up its food with a small penknife had given him the knife. "All I could do was sip soup and I was getting sick and tired of it."Mr Johnston said. "I could not even eat a tomato. I had to just suck the juice and pips out of it - it is embarrassing when you are walking down the street dribbling, trying to eat a sandwich. "The knife was not on me for malicious reasons - I did not think anything of it,"he added. The solicitor who represented him said he had received a drastic operation, which left him in an uncomfortable and unusual position.
