Shaun Underwood wins "fun, but tough" competition Monday 25th February saw 20 players take part in a homeless chess competition organised by Salvation Army, held at Rochester Row in Victoria. Tournament winner Shaun Underwood, who won £25 in cash and a £25 voucher, came to London in March last year to find accommodation, and found a home at a Salvation Army resettlement centre. He has been a chess player for the last 30 years, and says the game helps him to cope with his situation. Mr Underwood said: "The competition has been good fun, but tough. I would like to see more competitions like this." Others taking part said how much they had enjoyed the competition. One player said: "It's a very good idea - it is good socially and I have made a few friends here today." The tournament was the brain child of Mirek Polanowski, a senior project worker at Rochester Row, and refereed by members of the Greater London chess club. Derek Hadley, the tournament controller for the competition, said: "I think the tournament is a great idea. Some members of our club could give them a game." There are plans to run the competition again, and details will be published in advance on these pages.
