It's lonely being homeless in Newcastle

September 26 2009
Newcastle City Council claims that one of the city‘s two homeless people has nowbeen re-housed A recent street count in Newcastle, the largest city in the north-east of England, found, surprisingly, only two people sleeping rough, though many think the number is much higher. Twenty-five volunteers, under a government supervisor, carried out the count, which took place during the night of 1st and 2nd May. Even more surprisingly, Newcastle City Council subsequently said that one of the two homeless people has since been re-housed, so there was only one rough sleeper left in the city. However, a spokesperson for Shelter told The Pavement that the figure was not a true reflection of the numbers: "Official government statistics usually underestimate the number of people sleeping rough. To get a more accurate estimate, the current system must be implemented with conventional street counts."
