Remembering the dead

May 18 2009
Over 100 people commemorated at this year‘s moving ceremony at a packed St Martin‘s The annual service for homeless people who died during the last year, organised by Housing Justice and the Connection at St Martin's, was held on 8th November at a packed St Martin's. Last year, the names of almost 100 people were read out; this year, 105 people - both homeless and staff, and volunteers working with them - were commemorated by Monty, a Big Issue seller, and staff from The Passage, the Connection at St Martin's and Housing Justice. A further 15 names arrived too late for inclusion. Sister Rosalie of The Passage, Gordon Waller of West London Day Centre, Janie Kidstone from the Upper Room and Roger Shaljean from Connection remembered the lives of a few individuals with affection and humour. The theme of the service, 'Living Stones', was drawn from the New Testament: "He is the Living Stone, rejected by human beings but chosen by God and precious to him..." The congregation placed stones, many with the names of the dead, in a spiral symbolising eternal life. The service ended with a heartfelt rendition of 'There's a place for us' from Streetwise Opera.
