Two homeless men \'murdered\' in one week

May 22 2009
Teenager remanded in connection with death of Polish rough sleeper A teenager is to stand trial at the Old Bailey for the murder of a homeless man. Janusz Krason, 36, died from head injuries sustained in the early hours of Saturday 31st May. Dean Gabay, 18, was arrested on the same day and appeared before Brent Magistrates on Monday 9th June, charged with murder. Mr Krason, originally from Poland, was found dead in a derelict garage off Birchen Grove, Kingsbury, where he had been sleeping for the past six months with two other Poles. According to a report by This is Local London, on Saturday morning, Mr Krason had told his two friends he was feeling unwell, and he stayed in the garage while they went out for the day. On their return, they discovered he was dead. Unemployed Mr Gabay, of Neasden, was remanded in custody and is due to stand trial at the Old Bailey on Monday 15th September. Four others were arrested in connection with the murder. A 17-year-old and one other were bailed to return at a date in July, while a 15-year-old and one other were released with no further action. Just two days after the death of Mr Krason, another homeless man, Thiyagarajah Thiyananthan, 40, was found dead in a disused cash-and-carry warehouse on Atlip Road, Wembley. A subsequent post mortem at Northwick Park Hospital discovered Mr Thiyananthan, who was of Sri Lankan origin, had died as a result of head injuries. Police have confirmed they are treating the death as murder. The weapon used to kill Mr Thiyananthan has not been found, nor any motive for the crime. A Metropolitan Police press bureau spokesman said: "There is nothing to suggest there are links between the two cases or that there is a series or specific sort of threat, nor that the men were targeted for being homeless."
