The homeless vote, USA

May 22 2009
The 3.5 million Americans who use homeless services will be able to help elect their new president The number of homeless votes in the US is expected to have a substantial influence on the country's forthcoming presidential election, as support groups and shelters throughout the country ramp up efforts to register their users. The Associated Press reported that systems were being implemented across the US to make voting accessible for the 3.5 million individuals who use homeless services. Ballots are being delivered to soup kitchens on a daily basis, while parks and intersections are being set up as a fixed address for voters with no permanent residence, and more volunteers are receiving training from homeless organisations to record votes. Michael Stoops, executive director of the support group National Coalition for the Homeless, said his agency's efforts to register the homeless vote had been particularly successful this year as an increasing number of people were interested in the presidential race. Democratic Party hopeful Barack Obama has been credited with galvanising a large section of the population that usually fails to vote, according to a number of press reports. However, some officials are concerned about election fraud, as a study on data from a 2004 election showed inconsistencies between homeless voters and addresses.
