Pedalling for the homeless

May 24 2009
Glasgow‘s 6th annual Pedalling for the Homeless event will take place on Saturday 20th June The highlight of Glasgow‚Äö?Ñ?¥s Bike Week will take place on Saturday 20th June with the 6th annual Pedalling for the Homeless event, in aid of Lodging House Mission (pictured). The event has raised ¬¨¬£48,000 over the past five years to support the work carried out by the day centre, based in the east end of Glasgow, which includes food provision, help and advice from support workers, and an education and activities programme. The first event was set up in 2003 by a support worker with the aim of raising funds and awareness of the centre and homelessness in general. A keen cyclist, he wanted to offer a day that the whole family, regardless of age or cycling ability, could take part in and enjoy. Service users are also encouraged to take part and include cycling as part of a healthy lifestyle. Many take the opportunity to train weekly, and also take part in the Pedal for Scotland event held annually in September. Around 150 people each year take part in the six kilometre cycle, starting in Kelvingrove Park and ending in the SECC car park. Apart from the cyclists, there are many more who work behind the scenes such as local businesses and marshals along the cycle route, to ensure the event is a success. The 6th Pedalling for the Homeless event is part of the programme of events that celebrate the centre‚Äö?Ñ?¥s centenary year.
