The rising 'tide of homelessness'

June 01 2009
Repossessions soaring, warns Shelter Scotland Shelter Scotland has called for urgent action to be taken in order to prevent a 'tide of homelessness'. In response to the publication of repossession figures, Graeme Brown, Director of Shelter Scotland, commented, "These figures show a 23 per cent rise from the previous quarter in the number of repossessions, and a 50 per cent rise from the same period the previous year. Behind these statistics are individual tragedies." Shelter Scotland has been a part of the Scottish Government's recent working group on repossessions, which also included the Council of Mortgage Lenders. The report aims to provide more advice to those at risk of repossession. Brown was in support of the findings, stating, "These recommendations would extend the protection available to homeowners in Scotland and help keep families in their homes." Around 12,800 Britons lost their homes in the first three months of 2009, and it is estimated that 75,000 homes will be repossessed before 2010. It is hoped that the figure can be revised with a new initiative to assist homeowners facing financial difficulties. Shelter Scotland encourages anyone who is struggling with the cost of their mortgages or any other housing problems, to call their free advice line on 0808 800 4444.
