Inquest goes ahead as homeless man's family is found

September 26 2009
Painstaking search ends as homeless Czech man‘s son is found. A painstaking search for the family of a homeless man in Croydon, Surrey, has come to an end after the Czech national's son was found. Croydon Coroner's Court had adjourned the inquest into the death of William Dengar, 54, until his three children were tracked down, but a missing persons search finally led investigators to the son of Mr Dengar, in the Czech Republic. A coroner officer at Croydon Coroner's Court told The Pavement: "The family have not had contact with [Mr Dengar] for a long time. The son said he was not interested and that he'd heard nothing from his father in 15 years. It's a shame.‚Äö?Ñ?? Mr Dengar passed away on 1st July. According to the coroner officer, he died of a ruptured spleen at Mayday University Hospital in Croydon. Although Mr Dengar mentioned a bicycle accident at the hospital, it is believed he was referring to his own bike, which he was often seen with. The Czech national was thought to have lived in the Mitcham Road area of west Croydon for about seven years. His friend, full-time carer Kay Barot, did not find out the news of his death for a week as she only knew his first name. She told the Croydon Guardian: "We never knew about [his being ill] and he never complained about being in pain." In the newspaper report, friends and acquaintances remembered a "polite, respectful and helpful" man who spoke four languages, knew a vast amount about different cultures and would always lend a hand with gardening, shopping and digging cars out when it snowed.
