Stop stop-and-search

October 01 2009
Pink slips to be simplified Readers who have pockets full of bulky stop-and-search forms, the pink slips given by the police when conducting stop and search, will soon be collecting less paper as it was announced that the forms will be simplified. Under new rules, announced at the Police Superintendents' Association annual conference on 16th September, police officers will not have to complete the current lengthy form, but something simpler that will record basic data such as ethnicity and the reason for the stop. But the move, predicted to save 200,000 hours of police time a year, is unlikely to have a beneficial effect on readers sleeping out who get stopped a disproportionate amount of times compared with the general public. Advice remains the same with stop-and-search - ask for the form if it is not presented by a police officer, and keep it as a record. This is an issue we'll be revisiting in a future issue.
