A Finsbury fortune

October 01 2009
Rough sleeper leaves small fortune When Londoner Johnny Hubbard died recently, aged 74, he did so without knowing that he was leaving a small fortune as inheritance, despite being penniless. The money came to light only after the death of Mr Hubbard, a well-known face in Finsbury, North London, and went to his closest family. An amateur boxer and former Smithfield Market porter, Hubbard had spent around 40 years sleeping rough and in hostels around the City of London after a fight with another market worker had left him with brain damage. His family have said this had markedly changed him. Living on the streets, he did not know a distant relative had left him £35,000 several years before, even though a firm of probate specialists had been searching for the benefactors of this will.
